Ivan Marchenko: “Hello, I began to notice that my cheeks were turning red in the evening and the pressure rises to 150 mm Hg. I drink a lot of coffee at work. Colleagues say that most likely blood pressure jumps from him. The director claims that the drink, on the contrary, improves blood circulation and tones the cardiovascular system. Tell me, does coffee increase or decrease pressure? ”
Answer: Depends on the amount of drink consumed. A cup a day does not hurt! But more than 2-3 can slow down the speed of cardiac blood flow, increasing blood pressure. Hypertensive patients are better off giving up a delicious and invigorating drink, replacing it with chicory.

There is such a long-standing dispute between representatives of various fields of science. Everyone argues how coffee affects a person’s blood pressure. Long-standing because all the results of clinical trials do not give a clear conclusion. People react differently to caffeine and the results vary.
In most cases, a drink can increase pressure in a person, although it is not recommended to completely refuse a drink.
In most of us, caffeine significantly stimulates mental and physical activity. Often eliminates signs of slight fatigue, even exacerbates reflexes. If you drink too much instant coffee, you can even provoke a slight intoxication. Interestingly, about 15% of people after drinking a cup of a drink seem to get on the brakes, even want to sleep.
As a result, everyone makes a conclusion for himself. How does a drink affect it and when is it better to drink it.
Does coffee increase pressure? The most important question for people with hyper- or hypotension. To answer it, scientists first figured out how and what processes of the body are affected by caffeine.
It turned out that caffeine:
- Stimulates those nerve centers that are responsible for blood circulation. The pressure rises. Moreover, both systolic and diastolic.
- Concentrated caffeine can lead to a slight vasospasm.
- It blocks the production of a special chemical compound in humans – adenosine. Which accumulates while we are awake. He makes us want to sleep. Adenosine level reduction always means a certain increase in blood pressure.
- Under its action, the adrenal glands more actively produce adrenaline. This hormone activates many processes and also increases blood pressure.
It turns out that caffeine tends to raise blood pressure. But there are reservations.
If a person has normal blood pressure, then from a cup of coffee it usually rises. This lasts a short time, after which it is adjusted back. Healthy people who drink the drink all the time may not experience any changes in their blood pressure levels at all. This is one of the signs of addiction.
The less caffeine, the less dangerous it is to drink your favorite drink for hypertensive patients, taking care of your health.
In most hypertensive patients, natural coffee raises the pressure quite quickly and for a longer period than in healthy people.
Here is the danger because of which hypertensive patients are advised to completely abandon the hot drink, replacing it with chicory or herbal tea. It is very dangerous at high blood pressure to drink coffee with cognac – this is a direct path to stroke.
A little comfort for those who are diagnosed with hypertension and cannot live without coffee. One cup a day will not hurt much. But the brewed grains should not be strong! You can not drink a drink in the morning, preferably at lunch. It is recommended to dilute it with milk.
Soon after waking up, many people have lowered blood pressure, but gradually rise within a couple of hours. If the standard reaction of the body to coffee is added to this rise, the general state of hypertension may worsen.
An individual reaction with high blood pressure is also important. Any of us can demonstrate it to almost any product. People with unstable blood pressure should take this into account when drinking coffee.
Ideally, if it is possible to conduct several checks involving yourself, a cup of tea leaves and a tonometer. The results will show what caffeine does with your body. Raises, and maybe lowers pressure.
Or does not affect its level.

From this article you will receive a comprehensive answer to the question of how coffee affects pressure.
Victoria Stoyanova, category 2 doctor, head of the laboratory at the diagnostic and treatment center (2015–2016).
Coffee is loved by many people. It is appreciated not only for taste, but also for invigorating properties. And if you like this drink, you definitely wondered: after you have drunk coffee, will the pressure increase or decrease?
Click on the photo to enlarge
This drink contains caffeine and usually increases pressure, but in different situations it affects pressure in different ways. We will analyze all possible cases.
With a single use of coffee, it increases blood pressure. The hypertensive effect of drinking this drink lasts from 60 to 180 minutes. On average, 1 cup of drink increases systolic (“upper”) pressure by 8 mm Hg. Art., and diastolic (“lower”) – 5 mm RT. Art. when taken once by people who do not drink it regularly.
Doctors proved the following fact: coffee slightly raises the level of blood pressure by 1-3 hours and cannot cause hypertension in a healthy person.
The duration of the pressure increased from this drink depends on the individual characteristics of the body. How quickly the hypertensive effect occurs, and how long it will last, depends on the rate of caffeine breakdown in the body.
The results of one study of the effect of coffee on blood pressure
According to studies, with regular use of coffee, people develop a dependence on caffeine and other alkaloids. Tolerance is also developing: caffeine does not cause the same effect as before. Therefore, in people who systematically consume this drink, one cup of it does not increase blood pressure and does not lower it.
Regular coffee use develops caffeine addiction
However, based on this, it cannot be argued that regular use of this drink is safe for blood pressure. Since low doses of caffeine no longer invigorate a person as before, he begins to consume more of it.
The amount of drink consumed can go beyond all reasonable limits. Even some famous people became real coffee lovers. So, the French philosopher Voltaire (lived in the 18th century) drank more than 50 cups a day.
And Catherine II preferred such strong coffee that about 80 grams of coffee beans took to prepare one cup!
Attention! Researchers claim that regular consumption of more than 5 cups of drink per day increases the level of blood pressure for a long time. So, a person develops hypertension with an increase in pressure of 5-10 mm RT. Art. above normal.
The question of whether this drink can be hypertensive is controversial for doctors from all over the world. Some argue that with hypertension this drink should not be consumed. Others say that there are no strict contraindications. Let’s try to figure this out.
If you are hypertensive and do not drink this drink regularly, then be prepared for the fact that after a cup of coffee, your blood pressure level will rise by 3–7 mmHg. Art. This is not dangerous for those who suffer from not too severe hypertension.
However, you should be careful. In the presence of other adverse factors, the pressure can jump strongly. Therefore, if you are hypertensive, do not drink this drink in such cases:
- being stuffy indoors;
- being under the scorching sun in the heat;
- before physical activity or immediately after it;
- during the period when you are experiencing stress;
- within a few weeks after suffering a hypertensive crisis.
All this applies to one-time use of coffee by those who are not used to it.
If you have been drinking this drink all your life, and in adulthood you have been diagnosed with hypertension, it’s not necessary to completely abandon your favorite drink. In people accustomed to caffeine, coffee within a reasonable range does not affect the level of blood pressure. Therefore, you can drink this drink, but not more than 1-2 cups per day.
In any case, if you drink coffee with hypertension, notify your doctor about this!
Some hypotensives believe that coffee helps them get rid of problems with low blood pressure. However, this is not entirely true. Yes, after a cup of this drink, the pressure level rises, but only by 1-3 hours. And given that a person is awake for about 16 hours a day, then for a steady increase in pressure you need 5 cups of coffee.
Such a dosage is unacceptable even for hypotensive patients, since coffee also affects the heartbeat. Drinking such an amount of this drink can lead to tachycardia, which will increase the risk of other cardiovascular diseases.
And if we recall that tolerance is rapidly developing for caffeine, then 5 cups will soon become insufficient to achieve a hypertensive effect.
Coffee with chocolate can quickly increase blood pressure.
Conclusion: coffee is an absolutely ineffective treatment for hypotension! It increases the level of blood pressure by only 1-3 hours, and with regular use, you will need to increase the dosage, which is harmful to health.
With hypotension, you can drink coffee, but it does not have any significant benefit. The rule remains the same as for hypertensive patients: no more than 1-2 cups of drink per day.
Surprising as it may seem, some researchers argue that this is possible.
Decaffeinated coffee does not affect pressure
Scientists who say that coffee lowers blood pressure lead the following argument: the drink has a diuretic effect, and the removal of excess fluid from the body helps lower blood pressure, so the drink lowers blood pressure.

How coffee affects human pressure
A definite answer cannot be given, since the active substances contained in this drink, as in tea, can cause an increase in pressure or not affect its level in any way. The effect depends on the physiological state of the body.
With a single use, coffee raises blood pressure (blood pressure), but this effect is quite short-term and lasts no more than 3 hours. The increase occurs more due to the upper (systolic) figure and is most noticeable in people with an initially low level. But this statement is true only if you drink coffee in reasonable quantities.
With long-term daily use of the drink in doses of more than 2 cups, addiction develops and increases. Blood pressure does not occur. The invigorating effect disappears. This contributes to an increase in drinking volume. Such behavior is fraught with an overdose.
From the reviews of doctors, we can conclude that people without cardiovascular pathologies can safely drink coffee in reasonable quantities: one, a maximum of two cups per day. If you do not abuse the drink, then such a habit does not harm.
But even if your blood pressure deviates from the norm in the direction of increasing or decreasing, this does not mean that you should permanently abandon the use of your favorite drink. It is only necessary to carefully consider the amount of alcohol consumed and related factors.
If you have high blood pressure, you should not drink coffee if you:
- are in a stuffy room;
- experiencing dehydration;
- trying to quench your thirst during the heat;
- just finished an intense workout;
- plan to start cardio loading right after that.
If your pressure drops below normal and you feel weak and dizzy, then a cup of coffee will help lift it.
There are several factors that determine the degree of effect of caffeine on the body:
- The ratio of accelerating and inhibitory receptors of the brain. The caffeine molecule, in its structure, is similar to the adenosine molecule and perfectly occupies the receptors intended for the latter. These receptors are accelerating and inhibitory, usually the number of inhibitors prevails and caffeine occupies them to a greater extent, and accelerating ones remain free and then a person feels vigor, activity and a surge of energy. But if there are a majority of accelerating receptors, then the result will be the opposite. Caffeine lowers blood pressure, a person feels drowsiness, weakness and lack of energy.
- The quality of the liver. All substances that enter our bloodstream pass through the liver, where they are metabolized, filtered out, and after that, they enter other organs and the brain. If a person has liver disease or its work is weakened, then a greater amount of caffeine will pass through it, which means that the reaction of the body will be sharper and brighter.
- The initial indicator of pressure and a tendency to jump. We have already said that coffee has a lesser effect on a healthy person than on a patient with a tendency to increase or decrease blood pressure.
- The amount of fluid in the body. If a person is in a state of dehydration, then the volume of circulating blood also decreases, which means that the concentration of substances dissolved in the blood increases. Therefore, on a hot day, before drinking coffee, it is better to drink water first.
Coffee is a drink without which many cannot imagine life. It invigorates, improves mood and improves performance. The effect of caffeine is due to the effect on the centers of the brain, due to which cognitive functions increase – memory, ability to concentrate.
After taking a cup of coffee, an increase in blood pressure occurs within 15 minutes due to an increase in vascular tone. This effect does not last long and depends on the amount of caffeine.
At the same time, coffee abuse has the opposite effect.
A large amount of coffee is first stimulated by the body, improves performance and gives a boost of vigor, but after a few hours the vascular tone decreases sharply, resulting in drowsiness and loss of strength.
- increase in blood pressure;
- increase in heart rate;
- stimulation of the brain centers responsible for attention;
- relieve drowsiness.
At the same time, excessive consumption of caffeinated drinks negatively affects the nervous system, and over time can cause chronic stress, insomnia and a decrease in concentration.
Coffee gives a short-term effect.
Detonic – a unique medicine that helps fight hypertension at all stages of its development.
The complex effect of plant components of the drug Detonic on the walls of blood vessels and the autonomic nervous system contribute to a rapid decrease in blood pressure. In addition, this drug prevents the development of atherosclerosis, thanks to the unique components that are involved in the synthesis of lecithin, an amino acid that regulates cholesterol metabolism and prevents the formation of atherosclerotic plaques.
Detonic not addictive and withdrawal syndrome, since all components of the product are natural.
Detailed information about Detonic is located on the manufacturer’s page.
Coffee for hypertension
Is it possible to drink coffee with high blood pressure – it depends on the specific values of blood pressure and the amount of drink consumed.
Coffee raises blood pressure, but not significantly, by an average of 5-10 mm Hg. after drinking a cup of strong brewed drink. In addition, whether coffee increases the pressure will depend on the manufacturer, variety and type of roasting.
Care should be taken with soluble coffee granules, as pure caffeine is often added to such a drink to increase strength. Coffee of medium roast in moderate amounts slightly increases blood pressure and does not pose a risk to human health with normal or slightly high blood pressure.
Recent studies have shown that in patients who drink up to two cups of natural coffee daily, the elasticity of blood vessels is 25% higher than in people who completely abandoned this drink.
In addition, despite the fact that coffee increases blood pressure on a person, this drink does not affect the permeability of the walls of blood vessels and does not contribute to their destruction, but rather increases elasticity.
Thus, despite the fact that the drink does increase pressure, coffee does not have a negative long-term effect on blood vessels and arteries.
Coffee has a beneficial effect on the elasticity of blood vessels
Is it possible to drink coffee at high pressure – it depends on the specific pressure indicator. With arterial pressure up to 140 mmHg You can drink coffee, but in moderation. Is it possible to drink coffee with grade 2 hypertension – it also depends on the pressure indicators. In this case, doctors allow 1 cup per day in the morning.
Hypertension and coffee are not mutually exclusive concepts, but subject to several conditions. The maximum allowable dosage of caffeine for hypertension of the first and second stages is not more than 200 mg per day. So much caffeine contains 1 cup of natural coffee.
Hypertensive patients are allowed to treat themselves to a fragrant drink, but only subject to the recommendations of the attending physician. With hypertension, is it possible to drink coffee more accurately tell the cardiologist, after examining the patient.
If a person adheres to a diet, complies with the doctor’s recommendations and takes prolonged antihypertensive drugs, an increase in pressure after a cup of coffee will not affect the general well-being and course of hypertension, but only if you do not abuse the drink.
When drinking coffee with hypertonics, doctors often give one recommendation: if you can’t refuse a morning cup of coffee, add milk to it. When combined with fresh milk, caffeine loses its ability to influence pressure, which means its effect decreases. Coffee with milk or cream is less dangerous than the risk of high blood pressure compared to a pure drink.
Coffee for hypotension
Drinking coffee with hypotension is not only allowed, but also recommended. Since the drink has a tonic effect, one cup of coffee drunk in a cafe or at home quickly improves well-being at low pressure.
A cup of coffee for hypotension is a must
People with hypotension are often prescribed caffeinated drugs as a first aid for a sharp decrease in blood pressure. With hypotension, coffee contributes to:
- increase in blood pressure;
- improvement of well-being;
- elimination of headache and dizziness;
- increase efficiency.
The drink gives a boost of vigor, which is so needed at low pressure due to the fact that the body undergoes hypoxia due to a violation of blood supply and oxygen transport to brain cells.
Coffee lowers blood pressure only in one case – if you drink too much. At some point, the nervous system experiences a heavy load due to the constant toning of caffeine, and the opposite effect appears – a loss of strength, drowsiness, apathy. All this is due to a decrease in vascular tone.
This action is especially important to consider hypotonic, so as not to accidentally go too far with caffeine.
Coffee constantly maintains a leading position in the group of the most popular drinks.
The invigorating properties of its main component (caffeine) make you wake up after a night’s sleep, give strength and energy during the working day, if necessary, stimulate working capacity at night.
Opinions about whether coffee raises or lowers blood pressure, whether it is harmful to the cardiovascular system, are sometimes mutually exclusive. We will try to find out how justified these points of view are and whether to give up your favorite drink if the pressure deviates from the norm.
Drinking coffee activates most of the internal organs. These processes occur under the influence of caffeine – a biologically active alkaloid related to natural psychostimulants.
In accordance with natural biorhythms, it synthesizes adenosine nucleoside molecules that transmit signals of fatigue to the brain.
Caffeine stops the production of adenosine molecules, stimulates mental activity, concentration of attention.
At the same time, the production of dopamine and glutamine in the brain increases, increasing tone, causing a feeling of vigor and mood boost. These feelings often become addictive and addictive to a coffee drink.
The effects of coffee on blood vessels and the heart are mixed. It is useful to expand the vessels of the heart and brain, bronchi, improve blood flow to them and supply oxygen. Thus, cardiac and brain activity is stimulated, and working capacity is increased.
On the other hand, caffeine commands the adrenal glands to release adrenaline into the bloodstream, under the influence of which a person becomes emotional and excited.
What is the reason for this process?
The main active ingredient is caffeine. Due to it, stimulation of the nervous and cardiovascular systems occurs. This alkaloid blocks certain breakdown enzymes and, thus, contributes to the accumulation of organic compounds (dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin), which cause exciting effects.
- Stimulation of contractions of the heart muscle.
- Pulse increase.
- Dilation of the vessels of the brain.
- Mood boost.
- Reduced food requirements.
- Improving mental and physical performance.
It is worth noting another interesting effect of caffeine. It stimulates not only the cardiovascular system, but also the center of the vagus nerve, which has the opposite effect and inhibits cardiac activity. This explains the short-term rise in pressure and its subsequent return to normal.
Coffee under reduced pressure can normalize the rate. In this case, the use of natural ground coffee is recommended. You can buy whole coffee beans, grind it in a coffee grinder and brew. It is important that a person with hypotension consumes no more than 3 cups of the drink per day. This amount will be enough to bring it back to normal with low pressure. Increasing the dose can harm the cardiovascular and nervous system.
With reduced pressure, they drink caffeinated medicines. Therefore, it is natural that coffee is also not forbidden to take, but in reasonable quantities.
There is another feature – coffee can be addictive. If a person had enough of one cup in the morning to normalize the pressure, then over time this dose will not help. He will need 2 or 3 to achieve the usual result. But this is purely individual, and this is not the case with everyone. In any case, increasing the amount of coffee consumed (more than 3 cups per day) is dangerous to health.
Tips and Tricks
People who do not suffer from pressure drops may not be afraid of drinking coffee. For healthy people, this is even beneficial. Drinking 2-3 cups of tart drink regularly, you normalize the metabolism, improve memory.
You can also lower the risk of cancer, diabetes, cholelithiasis. There are chances to avoid depression, but only if the norm is observed. Too much caffeine depresses the nervous system, a constant feeling of fatigue appears, and the absorption of vitamins and microelements is disrupted.
It is not recommended to drink coffee before physical activity, such as:
- playing sports;
- work related to physical labor.
If you consume too much coffee, reduce the amount, but gradually. This will help to avoid a headache.
So is it possible for hypertensive patients to drink coffee in moderate doses? Yes, if you can not deny yourself this pleasure. But follow all the tips so as not to harm yourself:
- do not drink coffee before bedtime, immediately after waking up and on an empty stomach;
- drink no more than 1-2 cups per day;
- do not make coffee strong, dilute it with milk.
Coffee in moderation (2-3 cups) is good for the body. It has the following beneficial effects:
- increases tone and energy;
- stimulates mental processes;
- relieves fatigue and invigorates;
- improves bowel function;
- favorably affects potency;
- contains antioxidants, which means it helps to preserve youthful skin;
- protects against tooth decay;
- promotes weight loss;
- copes with depression;
- reduces the risk of cancer, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes.
Hypertensive patients should adhere to the rules and monitor their health after drinking a cup of coffee for an hour. If your health worsens, caffeine is contraindicated for you. There are worthy alternatives – for example, natural chicory.
For people with reduced blood pressure, coffee is good. But the effect of it is short-lived. It is important not to overdo it with the amount of drunk per day. Addiction, caffeine addiction can occur.
How coffee affects human pressure
For several centuries, caffeine has been known as one of the most affordable substances that can increase a person’s working capacity. By acting on the nervous system, caffeine causes vasospasm and reduces the amount of adenosine. Adenosine is a sedative that prepares the body for sleep.
Caffeine is a natural energetic that has an exciting effect due to the replacement of adenosine with adrenaline.
However, behind this seemingly positive effect, there are a number of serious changes within the body that lead to various deviations:
- dilation of blood vessels;
- acceleration of the heart rhythm; tingling in the chest area is possible;
- increase in blood pressure;
- increased acidity of gastric juice.
Coffee drinks are categorically contraindicated for heart disease or stomach problems.
The effect of coffee on blood pressure is not so straightforward. It is known that in most cases, 2-3 cups per day still increase both lower and upper pressure by 7-10 units, however, this rule does not apply to some people.
You should not abuse a fragrant drink. The invigorating effect lasts only 1-2 hours, and with an increase in “experience” it disappears altogether.
If, at elevated blood pressure, treating yourself with a cup of a coffee drink periodically seems possible, then high intracranial pressure and caffeine are not compatible.
Hypertension involves permanent spasms of blood vessels, leading to headaches and other health problems. There is also coffee. Together, these two factors can provoke an instant deterioration in well-being. Thus, ICP is an absolute contraindication to the use of caffeinated drinks.
Coffee has a huge effect on blood pressure. This fact is explained by the fact that the components that make up the drink act directly on the heart, vascular system and brain cells. The effect at elevated and reduced pressure will vary.
Due to the fact that caffeine has a stimulating effect on cells, when this substance enters the body, increased blood circulation begins. It is because of this process that a large load comes to the heart and vascular system, which subsequently contributes to an increase in blood pressure.
In a healthy person, this effect will be short-lived, and when caffeine is removed from the body, blood pressure indicators usually return to normal. With arterial hypertension, the situation is slightly different.
At a time when a person is sick with hypertension, any increase can provoke a worsening of the course of the disease and lead to a hypertensive crisis. That is why hypertensive patients are forbidden to consume coffee and coffee-containing drinks.
Coffee contains the maximum amount of coffee, but it is also found in other drinks.
Despite the fact that coffee is banned under high pressure, many neglect these prohibitions and, despite everything, drink their favorite drink. If you can’t completely refuse coffee, you should at least adhere to the rules for its use in order to minimize the risk of complications. About the dosages and standards for taking the drink are described below.
Note. In some sources, you can find information that three cups of coffee drunk greatly dilate blood vessels and affect the body as a diuretic. Because of what, blood pressure may decrease. There is no evidence that coffee lowers blood pressure in official sources, so it’s best not to experiment on your own body.
Due to the fact that coffee raises blood pressure, with low blood pressure it can become a “life buoy”. If in a healthy person the indicators quickly return to normal, then with hypertension and hypotension the result can be long-lasting. There were cases when people drinking coffee under reduced pressure improved and their blood pressure returned to normal levels.
With severe headaches, dizziness, nausea, drinking a cup of coffee can be a kind of medicine and eliminate all these symptoms in a matter of minutes. Therefore, due to the fact that coffee improves performance, it is often recommended for low blood pressure. However, do not abuse this drink so as not to harm the body even more.
A cup of coffee for people with low blood pressure is like a source of vital energy
Coffee is a natural energy drink. This palatable and amazingly aromatic drink can have an exciting effect on the body. This is manifested in rapid heartbeat and breathing, narrowing of blood vessels and general excitation of the nervous system.
People drink coffee not only to enjoy its taste. Just a cup of coffee is a great way to relieve fatigue and cheer up. There are different opinions regarding the benefits or harms of the drink to humans. But most of all people are worried about the question: “Does coffee raise or lower blood pressure?”
Scientists have found that the drink contains about a thousand different chemicals. Moreover, 80% of their total amount belongs to aromatic elements that give a wonderful taste and aroma, which is valued throughout the world. And only the remaining 20% determine its properties and characteristics.
The main substance that affects the body quite strongly is caffeine. It excites the nervous system and accelerates blood circulation, providing an invigorating effect on the whole body as a whole.
Caffeine is widely used in medicine. It helps with headaches, serves as a diuretic and is a stimulating energy. It is even used for weight loss.
However, the use of caffeine requires caution. Firstly, it can increase pressure. Secondly, caffeine is addictive. This is facilitated by special substances that make up its composition: theophylline and theobromine. It is they who make a person a real coffee lover, because without this special doping the body can not wake up.
The composition of coffee also includes elements that can prolong the effect of increasing pressure for several hours.
Does coffee raise or lower blood pressure? It has long been known that coffee acts on pressure due to caffeine, which is part of it. Caffeine, getting into the blood, excites the nervous system. In this case, vasospasm occurs, and blood pressure automatically rises.
This effect on the body is due to the ability of caffeine to block adenosine. This biologically active substance produced by the human body is responsible for inhibiting vigor and stimulating sleep. As a result of this, the organism is excited and the feeling of fatigue and drowsiness disappears.
In addition to acting on adenosine, adrenaline production is stimulated. Adrenaline further enhances the effect of vigor and activity.
Thus, a cup of coffee drunk launches a cascade of chemical reactions in the body, forcing the body to work in an active mode. However, the flip side of the coin is increased pressure and intense heart function. Does coffee increase pressure? Yes!
Studies by scientists have shown that coffee affects a person’s blood pressure in different ways. The experiments revealed quite interesting patterns:
- When coffee is used by healthy people, pressure deviations are negligible.
- In people with hypertension, pressure can increase dramatically and dramatically to critical levels that threaten health.
- In 15% of people who drink coffee, the pressure even drops slightly.
- With regular and prolonged use of coffee, the body adapts to caffeine and stops responding.
Pressure indications at which the use of coffee is not desirable
|Arterial pressure||Systolic pressure, mmHg||Diastolic pressure, mmHg|
|Optimal||Less than 120||Less than 80|
|Normal||Less than 130||Less than 85|
|Increased normal||130 – 139||85 – 89|
|1 degree||140 – 159||90 – 99|
|2 degree||160 – 179||100 – 109|
|3 degree||More 180||More 110|
|Border||140 – 149||Less than 90|
|Isolated systolic hypertension||More 140||Less than 90|
For people suffering from high blood pressure, it is best to give up coffee, or at least reduce the number of cups drunk during the day.
Oddly enough, but to get rid of fatigue, most people prefer instant coffee rather than natural coffee. But it is ground coffee that works more gently. In addition, it has a more pleasant taste and aroma.
The soluble analogue is significantly inferior in taste to the natural one, but at the same time it has a more pronounced effect.
- In order not to harm health, the daily dose of coffee should not exceed three cups (300 mg) per day.
- It is best to drink coffee for people with normal or even low blood pressure.
- It is advisable not to drink coffee before bedtime and in the evening. Especially it is impossible to drink coffee before bedtime for people suffering from insomnia. It is best to have a cup of coffee in the morning, before work and in the afternoon, after lunch, to add energy to the body and improve your mental and physical activity
- The invigorating effect of coffee on a tired and needing rest organism is not beneficial.
Coffee will give a boost of vigor, speed up blood circulation, which will positively affect overall well-being and ability to concentrate.
Each organism is an individuality and it is sometimes very difficult to predetermine its reaction to a particular product. Coffee has always been considered a product with controversial utility. There are still a lot of rumors and myths about him that prevent him from giving him the right rating.
Coffee is reputed to be the most tonic natural drink in the world. The body itself is already in tone, and then a sip of hot black liquid with a tart bitter taste. But this is not its only effect on the body. To understand whether it raises or lowers the pressure of coffee, you need to understand all its effects on the body.
Scientists have discovered about 1000 different substances in coffee beans. These are vitamins, organic acids, tannins, astringents, antioxidants and others. The most active of all components is caffeine. It is he who is afraid of people with hypertension and is appreciated by those who suffer from hypotension.
The effect of coffee on pressure
The body uses certain mechanisms of control over the processes of sleep and wakefulness.
To do this, it produces adenosine – a substance that modulates many physiological processes, including blocking excessive nervous excitement.
From exposure to caffeine, adenosine production decreases, but adrenaline rises. As a result, the person again feels energetic, but often quickly gets used to stimulants.
Once in the blood, doses of caffeine excite neural cells. From this, the vessels narrow and a sharp jump in pressure occurs. The question of whether coffee increases pressure can be answered in the affirmative. But whether it is worth imposing a categorical ban on all varieties of invigorating powder, remains to be seen.
A drink in the form of powder or granules is more convenient to prepare. The positive side is the reduced caffeine content compared to a natural drink, but we must not forget about a number of negative characteristics:
- the presence of synthetic flavor enhancers;
- the use of cheap varieties for making a drink;
- the presence of an unpleasant aftertaste in violation of technological processes.
Coffee beans, ground and just prepared, have a lot of useful properties: they act as an antioxidant, reduce the risk of developing atherosclerosis. The flip side of the coin is elevated caffeine levels, which should be taken into account if you suffer from hypertension.
After you have a cup of natural coffee, your blood pressure will inevitably rise for a while. Therefore, the question of whether it is possible to drink coffee with hypertension, everyone decides for himself, evaluating all the risks. If you can not live without coffee aroma and taste, at least do not drink it on an empty stomach and brew not too hard.
Coffee with pressure does not always lead to a deterioration in well-being. There is a category of patients, and not only hypotensives, who are not forbidden and even recommended to use a tonic drink in reasonable quantities.
The question of whether it is possible to drink coffee with high blood pressure often arises among coffee lovers whose high blood pressure is not blood, but intracranial.
The good news for them is that with such an ailment, your favorite drink will not only not harm, but will help relieve spasm of the cerebral vessels caused by impaired cerebrospinal fluid circulation, aneurysms, injuries, and thereby lower the pressure in the cranium.
Coffee contains ergotamine, which stimulates the cerebral cortex and has an antispasmodic effect. The pulse remains normal.
In diseases of the cardiovascular system, an energetic causes completely different processes than with intracranial pressure.
It provokes a sharp spasm of blood vessels, malfunctions of the heart (increased systolic pressure). Therefore, with hypertension, coffee is really not worth it, even if you really like it.
In the case when it is impossible to overcome the passion for the morning ritual, a few simple rules should be observed:
- Use only natural and proven varieties.
- Brew a weak drink.
- Drink no more than one cup per day.
- Drink in the daytime, 4 hours before bedtime.
- Monitor blood pressure after each cup.
A compromise for lovers of aromatic potions may be the choice of drinks in which the excitatory substance (caffeine) is contained in very small quantities – 5-10 mg per 100 g of product.
But such a product loses much in taste, and besides, one cannot call it absolutely useful. It is all about the technologies that manufacturers use to remove excitatory substances from coffee.
The lower the cost of the drink, the cheaper the method of decaffeination
In 2004, coffee trees were discovered in Brazil, on which grains of special varieties grow. As a result of gene mutations, they contain not caffeine, but theobromine, as in cocoa. This is a more preferable option for violations in the work of the heart. Coffee for good quality hypertensive patients has a number of advantages for the human body:
- Helps reduce symptoms of hypertension
- prevents the development of diabetes;
- has a less pronounced diuretic effect, which retains more calcium in the body;
- stimulates the digestive system.
Green coffee can also be attributed to hypertensive products with some stretch. One of the properties of green fluid is the ability to strengthen the walls of blood vessels. The drink contributes to weight loss, has a tart, sour taste. But since it, like classic coffee, contains caffeine, people with high blood pressure should follow the same precautions.

Instant black coffee is the most common drink format and is safer than cereal. In its production, the upper shell is separated from the grain, which contains the bulk of caffeine. It goes to the production of pharmacological preparations, and the core, in which the alkaloid concentration is much lower, becomes a soluble drink. The average caffeine content in it is 310-480 mg/l. You can use it almost without fear, since the risk of an overdose is extremely small.
Natural ground coffee – obtained by grinding whole coffee beans, which means that the drink retains the vast majority of active substances. The caffeine content in a regular drink is 380-650 mg/ml. The record holder for this indicator is espresso coffee, in it this indicator is equal to – 1700-2250 mg/ml.
Decaffeinated coffee. Such a drink contains an extremely small, permissible amount of this substance. Due to its low concentration, there is practically no effect on the body.
Coffee with milk. These two products have good compatibility. With this method of consumption, caffeine binds strongly to milk proteins and passes more slowly through the hepatic bloodstream, which means it enters the brain more slowly. In addition, milk dilutes the total volume, which reduces the concentration of active substances. The result is a very mild effect.
Brewed coffee brewed with a filtration step through a paper filter. Such a drink contains much less substances that can have a negative effect on the body, so we recommend that you pay attention to this method of brewing.
Separately, it should be said that it is undesirable to drink hot coffee, whose temperature is above 65 degrees. According to doctors’ reviews and statistics, this can lead to the development of cancer of the esophagus.
The fact that coffee invigorates helps restore strength, most people directly associate with its ability to increase blood pressure, put an equal sign between these phenomena.
Coffee, indeed, is a natural energetic, has an exciting effect on the body as a whole – here the heartbeat is quickened, and the perception of the world is more acute.
However, doctors still do not give an unambiguous answer to the question of what effect coffee has on pressure indicators.
In most cases, it really rises, but for some people it acts in the exact opposite way – it provokes lethargy, drowsiness. You will learn why you want to sleep from coffee in our article.
Doctors see the reasons for this in the individual characteristics of the body and believe that the mechanism of such an effect should be carefully studied.
What tea increases and what type of pressure decreases we told here.
With a typical reaction of the body to a cup of coffee, everything is pretty clear. The caffeine in the drink enters the bloodstream and provokes vasospasm. The result is an increase in pressure. We recommend our detailed article on how coffee affects blood vessels – here.
Dependence is direct. Caffeine also manages to block the work of a substance in the body called “adenosine”, due to which a person experiences drowsiness and loses courage.
Caffeine also contributes to the production of adrenaline, which also pours new strength into the body, and sleep, as it removes with your hand. Here is a general outline of the effect of coffee on the body.
What happens to a person from a medical point of view? After drinking coffee:
- vessels expand;
- the work of the heart becomes more intense;
- breathing quickens;
- the work of the central nervous system is stimulated;
- the pressure rises (taking into account the individual characteristics of a particular person).
The question of whether blood pressure rises or falls after drinking coffee has more than once become the subject of scientific research.
And here is what I managed to find out. If a healthy person drinks coffee, the pressure changes slightly. In hypertensive patients, the leap can be palpable and even dangerous to health.
But 15 percent of people who drink coffee and find themselves in the field of vision of the research reacted unexpectedly to an invigorating drink – data were obtained that the drunk coffee even lowers the numbers on the tonometer a little.
Doctors also dotted the “i” in the question of exactly which coffee raises the pressure. It turns out that any: instant, natural ground, green coffee and even coffee with milk, as it only has a lower concentration of this product, not to mention coffee with cognac (hypertensive patients should be especially careful with this drink).

The effect of coffee on blood pressure: increases or decreases
It is usually said that coffee raises blood pressure. Indeed, the vessels are compressed, the pressure rises in them, the heart works with increased frequency.
And studies in which subjects are given a portion of caffeine, and then measure the pressure, this is confirmed.
But in practice, it turned out that in the long run, coffee can lower blood pressure and, in general, have a beneficial effect on the heart and blood vessels. How it works?
Three fairly large-scale studies were carried out at once in the world to find out whether coffee is able to increase or decrease pressure with long-term use.
The complexity of such studies is that you need to monitor the condition of people for at least 10 years, or conduct surveys and compare health data with lifestyle, taking into account related diseases, living standards, bad habits and much more.
- French scientists for 10 years examined the health data of 200 volunteers from 000 to 16 years old, periodically recording their pressure and heart rate. The subjects who did not drink caffeinated drinks at all had the highest rates. Those who drank 95-1 cups of coffee daily, the indicators were lower, and the vessels were in better condition, people were less likely to seek medical help in connection with heart and vascular diseases. Then this study significantly shook the confidence of all doctors that caffeine should be reduced with high blood pressure.
- Swedish scientists have studied the effect of coffee on pressure in older people with hypertension, from 50 to 90 years. Those subjects who drank coffee daily for many years had healthier and more elastic vessels, and as a result were less likely to suffer from high blood pressure than those who drank coffee only occasionally or did not drink it at all.
- Greek scientists examined the health status of people on the island of Ikaria, where more than 30% of residents live to be 90 years old, and more than 50% of them consumed 1-2 cups of coffee daily. These people had the healthiest and 5 times more elastic vessels compared to those who drank 3-4 cups of caffeinated drink, or did not drink caffeine at all.
It seems strange that coffee can lower blood pressure, because vessels are compressed when caffeine is consumed.
But the fact is that the body of a person who uses coffee daily adjusts to this factor. Vessels daily and narrow, and expand, which serves as their kind of training.
At the same time, although there is an increase in pressure, it is not too noticeable by 5-10 points, which, in principle, is not felt at all.
- Those people who don’t drink coffee, the vessels are not used to shrink, become stiff, and with the slightest ailment or change in the conditions when they should shrink, there is pain, feeling sick, heart is beating hard. That is, everything happens because the body is not used to it.
- For those who drink more than 4 cups of coffee per day, the body simply ceases to absorb caffeine so much, so the blood vessels just do not respond, and therefore also become quite rigid. As a result – the same symptoms of feeling unwell, but at the same time, medications do not give a special effect, since the vessels are not used to training.
Coffee contains many useful substances, including magnesium and potassium, useful for the heart and blood vessels, trace elements, antioxidants. All these substances in reasonable quantities positively affect the body, fight the aging of blood vessels, blocking the destructive oxidation process, which leads to the formation of free radicals that damage cells.
Do not think that if you have high blood pressure and you drink a cup of coffee, it will somehow decrease. The effect will be the opposite.
Reducing the pressure from coffee occurs only in the long term, when a person drinks one or two cups of his favorite drink daily, and his vessels gradually, but regularly train.
After 50 years, such a person’s pressure will be more even and stable, and even lower than that of those who don’t drink coffee. Just because the body is already used to working this way, and the heart and blood vessels carry loads normally.
But abruptly start to use in the hope of “training vessels” is not worth it.
This is just an excuse not to stop drinking coffee, even if you have high enough pressure, and you are going to stop drinking completely, trying to take care of your health. Perhaps coffee lovers should only reduce the amount.
2 cups of coffee per day definitely will not cause hypertension and will not lead to constantly high pressure. If you drink a lot of coffee, reduce the dose to 2 glasses per day, and in the future this can help you. Most likely, after 50-60 years, you will have lower blood pressure than non-caffeine users.
In order for coffee to bring exclusively benefits, and could reduce pressure in the future, you need to know how to prepare and drink it:
- Give preference to a natural drink. In instant coffee there is nothing useful, only chemical components and only 15-20% of caffeine.
- You can switch to green coffee, it is especially useful, it contains many antioxidants and has a positive effect on blood vessels, practically without causing an increase in pressure.
- Decaffeinated coffee is a good choice. Caffeine is still there, but in very minimal doses, so that it slightly compresses the blood vessels, but is quickly excreted from the body. If you drink a lot of coffee, you can replace your third or fourth cup of coffee with a decaffeinated drink per day.
- Choose arabica, not robusta, or at least mixtures where arabica is 70%. The fact is that arabica contains natural oils, antioxidants and many trace elements, and it also has a little less caffeine. That is, it is more beneficial for the heart and blood vessels.
- It is useful to add milk to coffee, it reduces the concentration of caffeine, and it has a milder effect on blood vessels.
- The best time to drink coffee is lunch, and it is recommended to drink it with some food – cookies, fruits, a sandwich.
- You should not drink coffee on an empty stomach, especially with a cigarette, as this essentially causes a double reduction of blood vessels, which is clearly not useful.
- Studies have confirmed that people who drink 1-2 cups of coffee daily after 50 years usually have lower blood pressure than those who completely abandoned caffeine or drink drinks with it only occasionally.
- 1-2 cups have a beneficial effect, more than 4 leads to the opposite effect and stably increased pressure.
- Drinking a cup of coffee will not help in any way to reduce pressure if it is currently elevated.
- Only natural coffee is useful, preferably arabica, drunk in the morning, after eating.
- If you intend to quit drinking coffee due to the risk of high blood pressure, reduce its amount to 1-2 cups per day and do not give up your favorite drink.

Hundreds of studies have been conducted on the effect of tonic drinks on the body. As a result of analysis of recent years, it turned out that caffeinated drinks do not increase blood pressure, coffee even lowers blood pressure. Experts say that such an effect is quite likely under the following conditions:
- A person consumes about 2-3 cups of coffee per day for more than 3 years. In this case, the body simply gets used to it and a kind of dependence forms. The tonometer needle either freezes at a standard value, or even shows a result below normal.
- The composition of coffee can have the exact opposite effect on different people. Depending on the genetic predisposition, coffee really lowers blood pressure.
Coffee with low blood pressure is not a panacea. Trying to increase the pressure of the drink, you can not see any result. If the tonometer shows a value below normal, doctors recommend resorting to medications, caffeine under reduced pressure can give the opposite effect.
How pressure changes from different types of coffee
Caffeine either increases or decreases pressure depending on the human body, but hypertensive patients should definitely give up the following types of drink:
- Robusta made in Uganda;
- Robusta from Congo.
A milder effect will have the varieties shown in the table.
|Grade||The amount of mg of caffeine consumed per 1 cup (170 ml)|
Doctors and scientists have proved that 2-3 cups of a drink based on green thermally untreated coffee beans will not only not harm a healthy body, but will also help to avoid a number of serious diseases:
- cancer and diabetes;
- metabolic decline;
- problems with capillaries;
- diseases of the vascular system;
- pathology of the heart and brain.
A number of laboratory experiments have shown that green coffee can truly be called a gift from the gods. However, doctors strongly do not recommend drinking the drink to people suffering from hypertension, because of its standard high ability to increase blood pressure.
Decaffeinated coffee is another urban myth. Unfortunately, the share of caffeine in the drink will still be present, but to a much lesser extent. With a cup of aromatic drink, you should be ready to use about 14 mg of a substance that affects the pulse.
With high blood pressure and regular use of decaffeinated coffee, it is just as harmful as regular coffee. Therefore, in the case of an acute desire to taste an invigorating drink, it is better to use a classic cereal product.
Many believe that coffee with milk or lemon differs in degree of usefulness from its counterpart without additives, there will be no dramatic changes in the final composition. The only thing that can be changed in this way is the taste and the total calorific value in the direction of increase.
You can add yolk and cinnamon, syrups, cream to a tonic drink – the caffeine content will not decrease under any conditions. However, a healthy milk drink will have a beneficial effect on the gastrointestinal tract, enveloping the digestive organs with a thin film, thereby preventing mucosal irritation.
